Introduction to Steam Doors What is a steam door, and how is it different from a shower door? A steam door is a glass door specifically designed for a steam room. Steam doors require special gasketing to prevent steam from escaping. Not all shower door manufacturers offer the water and steam tight door system required by steam rooms. When ordering, always specify "for steamroom" or "steamer", since many of these glass doors are also manufactured for other applications. Steam doors are not completely airtight; they have a small gap at the bottom for ventilation. This does not allow steam to escape, since steam is lighter than air, and rises. Some steam doors have an adjustable/sliding jamb (Holcam MX models) to correct out-of-square openings. Sliding glass doors are also available. See Alumax section. They also make tub height sliding doors to make that area a steam bath or steam/bath/shower. We have both sliding and hinged doors that can be set up in any size or arrangement for the front wall of your steam room. Commercial models are typically sized for wheelchair access. Holcam residential models X2 and MX2 have 5/32" or 1/4" thick glass. Holcam commercial size doors are available in 1/4" thick glas. It has 2, 3 or 4 hinges depending on size. All EL hinges are spring loaded. There are many handle, hinge and color options. Since EL models are custom manufactured, order details must be verified before start of construction, with signature of the responsible party. These doors are beautiful, but fragile. When working with glass, always protect the edges. Do not set the glass directly on the floor or any other hard surface. For heavy use situations we recommend the Club 190. The continuous metal jamb mounts to a tiled wall, and must mount into a stud. We recommend Hydroshield for these doors. Holcam EL-45 Steam Shower enclosure.
